PVTIME – Mingyang Smart Energy has manufactured its first Tianqi MCD5.0MW ultra-low wind speed turbine at its production facility in Guizhou, China. This advanced medium-speed compact semi-direct-drive turbine is purpose-built for regions characterised by low wind resources. Achieving a cut-in wind speed of 2.5m/s and a swept area of 7.74m²/kW, the turbine yields 1,850 effective generation hours per year under typical 4.5m/s ultra-low wind conditions.

The drivetrain layout of the turbine has been redesigned to reduce component volume by 60%, using a large-diameter double-row tapered main bearing and a multi-planet flexible pin configuration to enhance operational stability. All key components support modular installation and removal entirely within the nacelle, eliminating the need for large-scale lifting equipment during maintenance and facilitating streamlined on-site servicing.
Smart digital functionality underpins the unit’s operational performance and is supported by an AI-enabled edge collaboration platform for wind farms. This technology provides full condition monitoring, predictive fault alerts and accurate operational diagnostics, thereby improving the efficiency of fault responses. Intelligent regulation increases individual turbine power output by 1% and boosts whole-project economic returns by 5%, shifting on-site wind farm management from passive post-fault rectification to proactive, data-driven operational control. The turbine has completed official offline validation, with mass production set to begin in three months.
Designed for low-wind climates found in inland Chinese provinces such as Guizhou, Guangxi and Hunan, the new model enhances the commercial viability of wind generation in traditionally challenging low-speed locations. The design is also engineered to withstand complex environmental conditions in mountainous areas, including icing and frequent thunderstorms.
