PVTIME – Under the EU EMPOWER initiative, Iveco will deploy Toyota fuel cell technology for real-world trials of hydrogen-powered heavy trucks.
As part of this collaboration, Toyota will supply its third-generation 300 kW fuel cell systems for integration into the 44-tonne Iveco S-Way Fuel Cell prototype vehicles. The partnership, led by Iveco, forms part of the €18 million Horizon Europe-funded EMPOWER project.
The vehicle developers’ goal is to achieve a driving range of over 900 km and a component lifespan of more than 25,000 operating hours. Compared with the earlier H2Haul hydrogen truck fleet, the design cuts battery capacity. Laboratory validation work is set to begin in Q4 2026, with on-road testing scheduled to start in H1 2027.
This joint project combines Iveco’s expertise in heavy-duty vehicle engineering with Toyota’s well-established fuel cell technology, thereby supporting Europe’s efforts to decarbonise long-haul road freight.
