PVTIME – At the World Economic Forum in Davos on 22 January, Elon Musk, founder of SpaceX, announced that SpaceX and Tesla will construct a combined solar capacity of 200GW across the US over the next three years, with each company responsible for 100GW. This energy will primarily power ground-based data centres and space-based AI satellites.

Musk explained that space-based solar power is six to ten times more efficient than terrestrial equivalents, capable of 24-hour generation and unaffected by daily cycles and weather disruptions. SpaceX intends to use its Starship to reduce launch costs and aims to deploy around one million solar-powered AI satellites annually, with the goal of reaching the first 100GW space solar milestone by 2030.
Meanwhile, Tesla will expand its ground-based solar capacity, doubling the US’s annual new solar installation volume.
