5.9 Billion Yuan! Hongjun’s High-Efficiency Solar Cell Project to Be Operational

PVTIME – The Hongjun high-efficiency solar cell production base which was launched on 13 April 2023 in Zhuhai City, Guangdong Province, China, with a total investment of 5.9 billion yuan, updated that it will be operational very soon as the construction of the facilities is completed and the equipment is setting up.

The project was initiated by Zhuhai Hongjun New Energy Co, Ltd, a subsidiary of Zhuhai Gree Group Co, Ltd, a major home appliance manufacturer, in cooperation with the local government. The Gree Group invested about 1.4 billion yuan in the adaptation of the plant and workshops. According to the plan, the project will produce 7.2GW of solar cells and 5GW of modules per year when completed in three phases. The first phase of the project will be completed very soon as planned, and the entire project is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

The aim of this project is to promote Zhuhai City as a photovoltaic capital and a national demonstration city for green, low-carbon development. After the project is completed and starts operating, its total annual energy consumption will be capped at 44,300 tonnes of standard coal equivalent, which includes an annual limit of 359,360,000 kilowatt-hours of power. The project aims to limit energy consumption per unit of cells to 360,000 kWh/MW and per unit of modules to 19,800 kWh/MW. When fully operational in 2025, the project is expected to generate an annual output value of approximately 11.8 billion yuan, an annual tax revenue of approximately 500 million yuan, and create nearly 1,900 new jobs.

Moreover, the project is designed to become the world’s leading production base for 1GW HJT cells while also functioning as a high-tech research and development center. The center will recruit a team of experts, including over 70 individuals with Master’s degrees and 30 individuals with PhDs, to collaborate with Cambridge University’s Perovskite Research Laboratory to jointly develop the stacking technology of HJT and Perovskite cells.
