PVTIME – New South Wales has launched a household energy efficiency programme worth AUD 557 million, designed to accelerate the adoption of clean energy in homes across the state. Eligible residents can access interest-free loans of up to AUD 15,000 to fund rooftop photovoltaic installations, residential battery energy storage systems and other household energy efficiency upgrades.

The state government hopes that this initiative will reduce the barriers to entry for clean energy technologies, lower residential power expenditure, and improve the energy performance of local homes. The programme is a key measure in the state’s residential energy strategy, which aims to install paired photovoltaic and battery energy storage systems in one million households by 2035.
Official state data shows that there is already strong penetration of renewable energy in the region, with over 50% of NSW households having photovoltaic assets and 13,000 new battery storage systems being installed each month.
The core programme will officially begin on 17 June 2026. Households with an annual taxable income of no more than AUD 210,000 are eligible for a 10-year, interest-free loan. Backed by AUD 480 million in dedicated funding, the scheme is expected to benefit over 32,000 households statewide.
A further targeted subsidy initiative will be launched in the second half of 2026, backed by A$77 million in dedicated funding. This initiative will offer subsidies of up to AUD 4,000 to eligible low-income households with annual earnings below AUD 80,000, as well as to valid concession card holders.
The state authority has outlined standard application protocols for applicants combining subsidies and interest-free loans for a single retrofit project. It advises claimants to utilise their subsidy entitlements first, before covering residual costs via loan funding. Tenants are also permitted to apply for relevant retrofit subsidies, provided they have prior approval from their property landlord.
NSW Premier Chris Minns has acknowledged that prohibitive upfront investment costs have consistently prevented households from taking up energy-efficient equipment. The new government support framework aims to increase residential access to clean energy infrastructure, helping local families to reduce their electricity costs and improve their living standards.
All loans under the government programme are administered by certified financial institutions and authorised suppliers, who are verified via the official NSW government online portal.
