PVTIME – Western Australia’s Economic Regulation Authority (ERA) has imposed a penalty of AU$1.2 million on the state-owned energy operator Synergy for faults in the trading software at the Kwinana battery energy storage system. The regulatory ruling was published on 5 September 2026.

Flawed bidding software at the Kwinana BESS generated incorrect market offers, triggering abnormal price spikes within Western Australia’s wholesale electricity market. This enforcement action serves as a significant compliance warning for Australia’s large-scale battery storage sector.
