ES | Amazon seals landmark Bairnsdale BESS tolling deal in Australia

PVTIME – On 3 September 2026, Amazon announced that it had concluded its first large-scale, standalone battery storage tolling agreement in the Asia-Pacific region.

The 50 MW/200 MWh Bairnsdale battery energy storage system is being developed by Anza Power in East Gippsland, Victoria. Backed by the global infrastructure investor I Squared Capital, Anza Power was founded in January 2026 with the aim of delivering clean energy assets in Australia and New Zealand.

The facility will connect to Australia’s National Electricity Market as a grid-only standalone asset with no co-located wind or solar generation. Under the tolling structure, Amazon will secure charging and discharging control rights for the storage resource in return for fixed payments, without taking ownership of or operational responsibility for the physical plant. This contract is the first standalone storage tolling arrangement in Australia to be struck by a non-energy corporate buyer.

Once completed, the BESS will discharge stored power during peak-demand intervals to bolster local grid reliability and support the integration of higher shares of renewable energy. No commercial operation timeline has been disclosed in the announcement.
