In this landmark evaluation, CATL secured a “Grade A” rating, ranking third globally. This milestone underscores global recognition of CATL’s integrated BESS capabilities beyond its deep battery expertise, validating its comprehensive strengths in long-term reliability, stable delivery, and bankability in the global market.

With BESS projects scaling up and lifecycles extending over decades, global buyers are looking beyond product specifications alone. Financial robustness, engineering capability, long-term service support and execution certainty are becoming key factors in procurement decisions. This shift is reflected in Wood Mackenzie’s evaluation framework, which assesses AC-integrated BESS suppliers across ten key benchmarks: R&D, supply chain stability, ESG, third-party certifications, safety, technology maturity, vertical integration, manufacturing experience, capacity and shipments, and financial conditions.
From an evaluation standpoint, CATL’s top-three ranking reflects its robust corporate competitiveness. The criteria for R&D, supply chain, ESG, and financial health together account for 50% of the overall assessment, indicating that Wood Mackenzie prioritizes system-level capabilities for continuous innovation, stable delivery, and global compliance over individual product specifications. Backed by its 21C Lab and six R&D centers worldwide, along with sustained, high-intensity investment in research and development, CATL has accumulated 60,000 patents granted and pending to date, providing a strong technical foundation for continuous innovation. Furthermore, CATL’s four overseas manufacturing facilities in Germany, Hungary, Indonesia, and Spain ensure reliable delivery across global markets. Its Carbon Chain Management System (CCMS) provides clear compliance pathways with transparent, end-to-end carbon data tracking.
Product capability determines whether a BESS can deliver reliable performance throughout the lifecycle of a long-term energy asset. Wood Mackenzie evaluates safety, technology maturity, and third-party certifications to ensure continuous system availability over multi-decade lifecycles. CATL applies lifecycle quality control management and incorporates NASA’s Technology Readiness Level (TRL) models to identify and mitigate risks early in R&D. Its TENER energy storage system, packing 6.25 MWh into a 20-foot container, leads the industry in energy density. Furthermore, its Xiamen Energy Storage Validation Research Institute (ESVL) expands validation from individual components to the full-station scenarios, ensuring long-term operational viability.
