700MW! Ignitis applies to delay offshore-wind scheme

PVTIME – The Lithuanian state-owned energy utility Ignitis Group has formally requested an adjustment to the schedule for its 700MW Curonian Nord offshore wind farm project, citing prevailing external constraints across related markets.

Submitted to Lithuania’s Ministries of Energy and Finance on 21 October 2026, the application seeks to defer the project’s rollout while retaining all existing development rights. Ignitis Group maintains that it will preserve work completed to date and that it will have the option to resume full-scale activity once financing, market and technical conditions become more favourable.

Curonian Nord is set to be the first commercial-scale offshore wind farm in the Baltic region. Having secured a positive environmental impact assessment in June 2026, Ignitis Renewables will continue pre-construction workflows with the aim of obtaining a construction permit in 2027, regardless of the proposed timeline shift.

Senior leadership at Ignitis emphasised that offshore wind remains critical to achieving Lithuania’s renewable energy and energy security targets. Nevertheless, management noted that current market conditions make immediate project delivery suboptimal for public-sector value. The group had already indicated possible delays to the start of commercial operations back in February 2025, citing challenges around supply chains and long-term power-offtake arrangements.

Government authorities will now evaluate Ignitis’ proposal before issuing a formal ruling on the revised project timetable.
