6.5GW! ReNew Energy Commits $500m to PV Ingot & Wafer Facility in India

PVTIME – ReNew Energy, India’s leading renewable energy provider, is set to invest 42 billion rupees (around $500 million) in a 6.5GW ingot and wafer manufacturing plant in Andhra Pradesh. This investment signals the company’s strategic move into the upstream PV supply chain, with the aim of achieving vertical integration and reducing reliance on imports.

Located in Anakapalli, near Visakhapatnam, the greenfield facility will be one of the first of its kind in India. It is expected to commence operations within 24 months and generate over 2,100 direct and indirect jobs. This aligns with the Indian government’s ALMM expansion plan, which will require List-III compliance for silicon ingots and wafers from June 2028.

The plant will enable ReNew to achieve end-to-end coverage of the PV supply chain, complementing its existing 6.5GW module capacity. ReNew aims to increase its cell capacity to 6.5GW by December 2026, with 2.5GW already operational. The company held 900MW of external orders as of December 2025.

This investment is part of ReNew’s commitment of 820 billion rupees to Andhra Pradesh, which was announced at the 2025 CII Partnership Summit. This includes 220 billion rupees for a 2.8GW wind-solar project and a 2GWh battery energy storage system (BESS). ReNew’s management notes that the facility will boost the localisation of key PV components and support India’s clean energy transition.

As of 31 March 2026 (the end of the 2026 financial year), ReNew’s operational renewable capacity stood at 12.6GW, comprising 2.4GW of new installations (1.75GW PV, 620MW wind and 25MW/100MWh storage). Total installed capacity reached 20GW, with 4.1GW of modules and 1.86GW of cells produced during the fiscal year.
