PVTIME – On 7 July 2026, the United States Department of Defense awarded a $7.1 million investment to Martin Materials Solutions LLC under Title III of the Defence Production Act. This funding will support the development of a domestic production line for space photovoltaic cell cover glass in Twinsburg, Ohio.
Photovoltaic cover glass is a mandatory component of all satellites, shielding delicate solar cells from cosmic radiation and micrometeoroid strikes while filtering targeted light bands and preserving the structural robustness of onboard hardware.
This investment fulfils the requirements set out in Executive Order 14369, ‘Safeguarding United States Space Superiority’, which was released on 18 December 2025 and aims to strengthen domestic core industrial capabilities within the space sector.
Michael Cadenazzi, Assistant Secretary of War for Industrial Base Policy, noted that aerospace-standard cover glass is vital for the sustained, reliable performance of satellite power systems. A fully developed domestic manufacturing capability would offer protection for national space assets and guarantee the smooth delivery of all orbital operational tasks.
