UK Unveils New 2040 Greenhouse Gas Emissions Cut Target

PVTIME – The UK government has launched a revised national decarbonisation target, with the aim of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 87% by 2040 compared to the 1990 baseline. It is anticipated that this will lower national electricity expenses and generate new employment opportunities across the UK.

Ed Miliband, the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, has stated that increasing domestic clean energy production is the most effective economic strategy for protecting UK households and businesses from volatile fossil fuel market conditions. Recent energy price pressures stem from global supply disruptions following significant price surges triggered by the European geopolitical crisis of 2022.

Official figures show that UK greenhouse gas emissions have fallen by 54% since 1990, with a further annual reduction of 2% registered in the latest reporting year. This decarbonisation progress is predominantly driven by reduced industrial emissions, largely due to the closure of blast furnaces in the domestic steel industry.

Government analysis highlights the key role of the clean energy sector in driving employment growth. Recent research from a UK energy and climate think tank shows that the country’s net-zero economy currently supports over one million jobs nationwide.
