SpaceX in Talks Over Polysilicon Supply with OCI Subsidiary

PVTIME – According to a report from South Korean media outlet MAEIL BUSINESS dated 15 April, SpaceX is in negotiations with TerraSus, the Malaysian subsidiary of South Korean polysilicon manufacturer OCI Holding, for a polysilicon supply agreement. The polysilicon will be used to support the provision of photovoltaic power for SpaceX’s data facilities and satellite operations.

The proposed contract is set to run for three to five years and is estimated to be worth 1 trillion South Korean won. Discussions are ongoing to finalise the specific terms of the agreement.

When approached for confirmation of the potential deal, SpaceX has yet to respond. A spokesperson for OCI Holding stated that the company is unable to confirm the report at this stage.

On 15 April, shares in OCI-related entities saw significant gains. OCI Holdings (010060) rose by 24.93%, as did OCI Co., Ltd. (456040) rose by 6.66%. Analysts at Samsung Securities commented that there is a strong incentive to source non-Chinese polysilicon, driven by the eligibility criteria for subsidies under the Inflation Reduction Act.

Separately, market reports from 20 March indicated that Tesla plans to invest USD 2.9 billion in battery and module production equipment from Chinese photovoltaic equipment firms. Potential suppliers include Suzhou Maxwell Technology Co. Ltd. and Laplace New Energy Technology Co., Ltd.
