LONGi retools TOPCon lines for HPBC 2.0 output

PVTIME – PV giant LONGi is set to carry out a major technical transformation at its module manufacturing facility in Anhui Province, earmarking CNY 736.3 million to retrofit three existing TOPCon production lines for its proprietary HPBC 2.0 back-contact module platform.

This project is part of the manufacturer’s broader strategy to increase the proportion of high-efficiency BC-based products in its portfolio. Documentation filed with local environmental regulators outlines the conversion work, which will repurpose existing TOPCon assembly capacity instead of constructing new manufacturing infrastructure from scratch. This retrofit approach enables LONGi to utilise its latest cell-to-module processing expertise while making use of existing factory premises and core equipment.

HPBC 2.0 is LONGi’s second-generation back-contact technology, offering higher mass-production conversion efficiency and greater module power output than conventional TOPCon alternatives. By retrofitting these three lines, the group intends to expand its manufacturing capacity for premium-grade HPBC 2.0 modules to cater for growing demand in distributed generation, utility-scale solar, and overseas project markets.

In the highly competitive global PV sector, many manufacturers are under pressure to continuously update their production hardware. Instead of large-scale greenfield developments, capacity retrofits have become a practical way for established companies to adjust their product range, reduce capital expenditure and keep up with fast-moving cell technology. The Anhui upgrade signals LONGi’s continued prioritisation of BC-centred product differentiation amid ongoing industry price pressure.
