GW-scale! New solid-state battery milestone for Greater Bay Technology

PVTIME – On 13 October, Greater Bay Technology held a commissioning ceremony for its upgraded all-solid-state battery mass-production line at its Nansha headquarters in Guangzhou. This is the industry’s first GW-scale solid-state battery production line retrofitted from existing facilities. It is designed to manufacture cells that comply with the national standard GB/T 48093.1-2026, marking a major breakthrough for large-volume solid-state battery manufacturing.

Developed from a national-level composite solid-electrolyte R&D project, this approach avoids the need for capital-intensive greenfield construction. Selective process modifications to existing 4GWh liquid lithium battery lines enable the shift to manufacturing all-solid-state products. The result is an industry-leading mass-production model with controllable costs, quality and lead times, bridging the gap between technical innovation and commercial deployment.

Volume-produced cells have passed independent third-party validation. Following six-hour vacuum baking at 120℃, they registered less than 0.5% weight loss, meeting the criteria laid out in GB/T 48093.1-2026, which was published in late August. Greater Bay Technology is the first market player to obtain compliance certification under this national solid-state battery standard.

The cells have also passed all cell-level safety tests under GB 38031-2025, which came into effect on 1 July 2026. Third-party nail-penetration testing recorded no ignition or explosion when fully charged cells were fully pierced, with cell structural integrity maintained.

The firm has realised fundamental material-and-process innovations built around its proprietary deep-eutectic composite solid-electrolyte technology. Within cost-controlled boundaries, its solid-state cells deliver specific-energy performance ranging from 260Wh/kg to 480Wh/kg, matching the cycle life of conventional lithium-ion batteries while supporting stable fast charging.

The industrialisation of solid-state batteries has long been constrained by costly new infrastructure, lengthy project timelines and high manufacturing expenditure. Contrary to common market assumptions, Greater Bay Technology’s electrolyte solution is highly compatible with proven lithium-ion manufacturing workflows and does not require purpose-built production lines. GW-scale capacity is achieved through targeted retrofitting, eliminating the need for large-scale civil engineering or the procurement of expensive, specialised equipment.

Company representatives characterise the project as an upgrade of proven production assets rather than a ground-up build. Reusing established production lines reduces capital expenditure and equipment depreciation, creating scope for the future adoption of cost-competitive solid-state batteries. The all-solid-state cells are also suitable for high-end energy storage applications.
