Chile Wind and Solar Curtailment Reaches Record Levels

PVTIME – According to data released in early September by the Chilean Renewable Energy and Storage Association (ACERA), Chile’s non-conventional renewable energy sector recorded 2.68GW of curtailed generation between January and July 2026. This figure represents the highest level of curtailment for this period since national records began in 2016.

The association identified an oversupply of renewable generation capacity as the main reason for the increase, and insufficient north-south transmission infrastructure as a secondary reason.

As of September 2026, Chile had 138 battery storage projects in development or operation, with a combined installed capacity of 11,231MW. Industry analysis suggests that curtailment volumes will ease towards the end of the year and decline further in 2027 as storage infrastructure becomes fully operational.
