US$5.7bn! Uruguay signs solar-powered data centre deal with Solaria

PVTIME – On 16 October 2026, the Uruguayan government announced that it had signed a strategic investment agreement with the Spanish renewable energy company Solaria to develop a solar-powered data centre campus valued at approximately US$5.7 billion. Described as the largest single investment in Uruguay’s history, the deal will see Solaria establish a solar-powered data centre campus in the country.

The first phase will deliver 200MW of data centre capacity, supported by 350MW of dedicated solar generation. A second phase could provide an additional 300MW of data centre capacity, with the amount of additional photovoltaic capacity to be determined by demand.

The facilities will be spread across three departments. Solar generation will be concentrated in Florida, while the first-phase data centre will be located in Canelones. Additional sites include San José.
Uruguay’s state-owned electricity utility, UTE, will provide the land for the solar plants and has entered into a 40-year power purchase agreement with Solaria. The first phase is expected to be completed between 2029 and 2030, creating more than 3,000 jobs in the process.

Approximately US$5.5 billion of the total investment is allocated to the data centre campus, and around US$2 billion to the solar generation facilities. This development comes as Uruguay, which generated around 98% of its electricity from renewable sources in 2025, aims to add 500–600MW of new solar capacity by 2030.
