PVTIME – ScottishPower, a subsidiary of the Iberdrola Group, has completed the decommissioning of Scotland’s earliest commercial-scale wind farm at Hagshaw Hill. An independent assessment carried out by Mott MacDonald verified that 99.9% of the site’s materials were recycled or reused after the original 26 wind turbines were removed.
The third-party audit categorised the materials as 79.5% for recycling and 20.4% for direct reuse, with only 0.1% going to landfill. All of the old turbine hardware has been removed from site as part of the decommissioning process.
Work on the repowering project is now underway on site. The existing site is being redeveloped into a 79MW wind farm to replace the retired legacy assets. This outcome sets a new industry benchmark for the performance of the circular economy in the decommissioning of onshore wind farms across the United Kingdom.
