10GW Solar Base Breaks Ground in Maharashtra

PVTIME – Waaree Energies, India’s leading solar module manufacturer, has formally begun construction of an integrated solar ingot and wafer production site in the Butibori Industrial Area in Nagpur, Maharashtra. This development is a key part of the company’s plans to increase its involvement in the PV supply chain.

The 300-acre facility required a total investment of 62 billion Indian rupees (approximately $670 million) and is planned to deliver 10GW of solar ingot and 10GW of solar wafer capacity. Upon completion, it is projected to create over 8,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities.

Waaree Energies held a groundbreaking ceremony for the facility. The company emphasised that the new plant will address the supply gap in India’s domestic solar upstream manufacturing and provide the core components necessary for the growth of the country’s local PV sector. As a domestic solar module producer, Waaree Energies regards this expansion into the upstream sector as a key strategic measure to reinforce its market position.

The company currently has a total solar module capacity of around 22.3GW and a maximum solar cell capacity of 5.4GW. The new upstream facility will complement its downstream operations effectively. Recently, Waaree Renewable, an affiliate of Waaree Energies, secured a 420MW solar EPC order, further strengthening the company’s integrated upstream–downstream development framework.
