LONGi’s Zhong Baoshen Highlights PV Innovation Paths

PVTIME – The 19th China International New Energy Forum, themed ‘Low-Carbon Applications, Diverse Markets’, took place in Beijing, China, on 17 September. Zhong Baoshen, Chairman and General Manager of LONGi Green Energy, attended the event, joining a panel discussion on ‘Pathways for High-Quality New Energy Development Under New Circumstances’.

Mr Zhong has previously stated that, in the face of a complex and ever-changing external environment and challenges, the industry must treat innovation as its driving force. This involves focusing on technological breakthroughs, scenario-based applications, and ecosystem optimisation in order to explore differentiated and diversified development paths.

During the discussion, he emphasised that the PV industry is now in a critical period of technological iteration and adjustment to the supply-demand structure. He pointed out that the sector has always relied on innovation to reduce costs and improve efficiency, from the early competition between monocrystalline and polycrystalline technologies, to the current high-efficiency cell routes represented by BC technology, which continue to push the boundaries of efficiency.

He noted that, while future industry growth will remain innovation-driven, the direction of innovation will expand beyond improving efficiency and cutting costs to involve deepening innovation around scenario-based applications. This will enable PV to serve more sectors more widely and effectively.

To address the challenges currently facing the industry, Zhong put forward three suggestions. Firstly, he proposed raising market access standards to expand the market space for high-efficiency, advanced products, while also facilitating the orderly phase-out of inefficient and outdated production capacity. Secondly, he called for an end to the ‘lowest-price wins’ approach, for the strict enforcement of the Tendering and Bidding Law, and for quality supervision to be strengthened in order to prevent a decline in product quality caused by excessive internal industry competition. Thirdly, Zhong called on state-owned enterprises to place greater emphasis on long-term value indicators, such as technical efficiency and reliability, during bidding processes. This would guide the industry towards a development trajectory focused on high technology and high quality, rather than price competition.

Zhong stated that the industry can only effectively tackle current supply-demand imbalances and promote the sustained, healthy development of the PV sector through the dual drivers of technological upgrading and application innovation. He urged the entire industry to collaborate, drive the energy revolution through technological innovation, and build an inclusive, sustainable, and collaborative new energy ecosystem.
