PVTIME – Huarou PV, a company based at the Wenzhou National University Science Park, has set a new world record for the efficiency of single-junction perovskite solar cells. The company’s independently developed device, certified by the National Photovoltaic Industry Metrology and Testing Center (NPVM), achieves a power conversion efficiency of 27.98% under standard solar illumination.

Perovskite solar cells are advanced photovoltaic devices that utilise perovskite materials with specific crystal structures to convert light into electricity. They outperform traditional silicon-based cells thanks to lower costs, greater manufacturing flexibility and reduced weight. This addresses the limitations of form and weight inherent in traditional cells, while also resolving the issue of sharp efficiency declines in low-light environments.
To enhance stability, Huarou PV has implemented a three-layer protection strategy incorporating improved stable formulas, advanced packaging materials and a multi-layer structural protection system to prevent moisture and oxygen ingress. The company is also actively involved in developing industry testing standards to secure long-term market confidence through robust, reproducible data.
Guan Hao, an R&D engineer at Huarou PV, explained that this breakthrough is due to innovations in controlling the crystallisation quality of perovskite films and regulating interface defects, which minimise internal imperfections to improve electrical conductivity. The company’s cells remain at the forefront of international standards for key parameters such as open-circuit voltage and fill factor.
With over a decade of expertise in flexible perovskite technology, Huarou PV, which moved to the Wenzhou National University Science Park in September 2023, is developing flexible perovskite cells with over 25% efficiency on lightweight, flexible substrates. These are intended for use in consumer electronics, IoT devices, wearables, building-integrated photovoltaics, transport energy integration and space energy.
