1.3GW! Australian wind project passes state assessment

PVTIME – Virya Energy has been granted planning permission for the 1.3GW Meering West wind farm in Victoria, Australia. The Belgian-headquartered renewable energy developer will incorporate on-site battery energy storage alongside the wind generation plant at the proposed site. The project is located within the Murray Renewable Energy Zone, a region designated by the state government for the accelerated expansion of renewable energy capacity.

While this state approval is a key regulatory milestone, further approvals must be secured before construction can begin. The development still needs to complete federal environmental assessment processes and finalise grid connection terms prior to a final investment decision being made. The location benefits from strong wind resources and proximity to planned transmission infrastructure intended to transport clean power to consumption centres.

The progress of the scheme will contribute to Victoria’s renewable energy targets by adding substantial prospective wind capacity to the state’s development pipeline. The Australian permitting framework requires sequential clearance across multiple tiers of government, so state planning approval alone does not guarantee project delivery. Network upgrade timelines remain a source of uncertainty for many renewable energy projects in the region.

Virya Energy has not published construction start dates or capital expenditure estimates for Meering West. The successful delivery of the project depends on the completion of outstanding regulatory checks, the establishment of viable offtake arrangements, and the timely rollout of supporting transmission assets.
