PV | 0.85mm! SolarWindow ultra-thin solar modules achieve 24.4% efficiency

PVTIME – SolarWindow Technologies, a US manufacturer of flexible photovoltaic solutions, has released its new ElectroFlex modules. Engineered with back-contact cell technology, these ultra-thin products have a total thickness of just 0.85mm, a cell efficiency of 24.4% and a nominal power-to-weight ratio of 73W/kg. They are suitable for deployment on flat, curved and irregular surfaces.

Each module has a structured five-layer composition comprising a 0.10mm front encapsulation layer, a 0.16mm solar cell layer, a 0.04mm copper backing layer, a 0.30mm composite layer, and a 0.25mm rear substrate layer. Integrated rear adhesive enables straightforward attachment to surfaces through a peel-and-stick installation method, eliminating the need for traditional mounting hardware. This flexible design allows for integration with transportation and building assets, including trucks, marine vessels, rail vehicles and aircraft. It is ideal for scenarios where heavy, rigid, conventional glass photovoltaic modules would not be suitable. The modules can also be used in agriculture, public infrastructure, utilities and specialist vehicles.

Initially, commercial supply of the new modules is limited to tier-one US original equipment manufacturers. SolarWindow intends to expand its market coverage across North America and Asia in the coming quarters.
