China’s Response to US Tariff Hike on Renewable Products

PVTIME – China has vowed to vigorously defend its interests in the face of huge new US tariffs, warning that the trade barriers will affect the broader relationship between the two economic superpowers.

Joe Biden, the US president, announced on Tuesday that tariffs on $18 billion worth of imports of Chinese electric vehicles, solar cells and a range of other products would soar over the next two years.

China “firmly opposes” the new tariffs, the country’s commerce ministry said in a statement.

“The increase in … tariffs by the United States contradicts President Joe Biden’s pledge to ‘not seek to suppress and contain China’s development’ and ‘not seek to decouple and break ties with China’,” and “this action will seriously impact the atmosphere of bilateral cooperation.”

“China opposes the unilateral imposition of tariffs which violate World Trade Organization rules, and will take all necessary actions to protect its legitimate rights,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said at the Chinese Foreign Ministry’s regular press briefing on 14 May 2024.
