Bankruptcy hits airborne wind firm Kitepower

PVTIME – Kitepower, a Dutch airborne wind specialist, has been placed into bankruptcy, with a court-appointed trustee opening a sale process for the firm’s technology assets. The trustee is inviting expressions of interest from parties capable of taking ownership of the company’s kite-powered wind generation portfolio, including the associated intellectual property, prototypes, and operational test datasets.

Kitepower pursued high-altitude wind capture as an alternative to conventional tower-mounted wind turbines. Its development programme involved testing at sites across Europe, but the business failed to secure sufficient ongoing funding or commercial traction to remain operational.

There is no fixed timetable for the asset transaction. The successful purchaser will be responsible for deciding whether to continue the further development and commercial rollout of the airborne wind technology.
