520MW! South-Africa’s Koruson 2 cluster goes live

PVTIME – The South Africa-focused joint venture Envusa Energy, established through a partnership between EDF and Anglo American, brought its 520MW Koruson 2 hybrid renewable cluster into commercial operation on 29 October 2026.

The multi-asset scheme comprises two wind farms and one utility-scale photovoltaic plant, forming a major new source of low-carbon power for local mining operations. It unites the 140MW Umsobomvu Wind Farm, the 140MW Hartebeesthoek Wind Farm and the 240MW Mooi Plaats PV Facility, all of which are located across the border between South Africa’s Eastern Cape and Northern Cape provinces.

Power generated across the Koruson 2 cluster will be aggregated and delivered via national grid wheeling arrangements to energy-intensive mine sites operated by businesses in the Anglo American group. This milestone is a tangible step towards the partners’ broader ambition of scaling up clean energy capacity for heavy industrial consumers in Southern Africa.

As one of the country’s largest privately financed wind-solar portfolios, Koruson 2 shows how joint venture structures can unlock utility-scale renewables to support industrial decarbonisation in South Africa’s evolving power market.
