PVTIME – The New South Wales government has introduced legislation to extend the state’s Renewable Energy Zone framework to include data centres, requiring their operators to cover the full cost of the grid infrastructure needed to support their electricity demand.
Battery energy storage systems are expected to play a central role in helping operators comply with the new requirements. By combining on-site storage with renewable energy generation, data centres will be able to manage peak demand, reduce pressure on the transmission network, and align their operations with the state’s decarbonisation goals.
The extension of the Renewable Energy Zone model reflects New South Wales’s broader strategy of coordinating large, energy-intensive loads with planned renewable energy development. Data centres have become one of the fastest-growing sources of electricity demand in the state due to the growth of cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and digital services.
This legislation is expected to provide greater certainty for network planners and data centre developers alike, while also reinforcing the critical role of storage in enabling a reliable, low-emission power supply for industrial-scale consumers.
