Extreme Weather Disrupts Rural PV Facility in Hubei, China

PVTIME – On the evening of 6 July, extreme severe convective weather featuring violent gusts impacted Baisha Town in Yangxin County, Huangshi City, Hubei Province, China. Local outdoor infrastructure was extensively damaged during the event, including a 25kW village photovoltaic installation in Wangwujing Village, which was severely and irreparably damaged.

This facility is a key source of income for the village’s collective economy. Violent winds dislodged and fractured the installation’s mounting structures and PV modules, breaking the power transmission lines and rendering the entire system inoperable. The outage has halted ongoing revenue streams for the village collective, while loose and broken components pose a tangible risk of falling debris and electrical leakage.

The asset operator immediately activated its formal emergency response framework following the weather incident. Qualified O&M personnel attended the site promptly to carry out emergency mitigation works. They isolated the full electrical supply to negate fire and leakage risks, completed systematic damage assessments and formal visual documentation, and secured unstable structural elements. Controlled perimeters and safety signage were put in place to mitigate the risk of any secondary accidents.

Engineering evaluations confirm that all damaged equipment is beyond economical repair. With the industry’s peak solar generation period underway, continued downtime will compound the village collective’s financial losses. The operator is progressing with accelerated reconstruction work, coordinating with component suppliers to fast-track the delivery of replacement PV panels, reinforced mounting frames, and auxiliary cabling. Streamlined internal procedures are supporting the rapid clearance of the site, reinstallation and commissioning, with all activity focused on the early re-energisation of the grid and the recovery of lost power output.
