PVTIME – Trina Solar has successfully developed a new THBC hybrid back-contact cell, with a maximum conversion efficiency of 28.0% certified by the authoritative German ISFH institute. This milestone marks the first time that the 28.0% efficiency barrier has been broken for large-area 210R crystalline silicon cells. To date, Trina Solar has set 39 photovoltaic world records, driving industry advancement through technological innovation.

Unlike traditional TBC cells, which rely on single high-temperature diffusion passivation, the new THBC cell uses hybrid passivation technology. Combining TOPCon’s excellent passivation contact and HJT’s high-efficiency passivation alongside a back-contact electrode design enables it to reach the 28.0% efficiency mark. THBC modules offer high front-side efficiency and stable power generation, making them ideal for high-value distributed rooftop applications.
This breakthrough is the result of Trina Solar’s long-term investment in R&D. A leader in TOPCon efficiency, the company has over a decade of experience in back-contact technology and has set six world records for BC cell and module efficiency since 2014. Trina Solar also supplies high-efficiency BC cells for Osaka Sangyo University’s (OSU) solar-powered racing car, which has won multiple international competitions.
THBC is compatible with 110–130µm thin silicon wafers and mainstream TOPCon production lines. Trina Solar is accelerating the industrialisation process using an existing pilot line, and standard 2382mm×1134mm modules are expected to exceed 700W output. A new THBC-based product range is set to launch soon.
Trina Solar will adopt a “TOPCon+THBC” dual-driven strategy. This will optimise TOPCon for over 85% of bifacial power generation scenarios, advancing High Efficiency 3.0 and 4.0 while promoting the full industrialisation of THBC for monofacial applications and delivering value to customers. This integrated approach will improve industry efficiency and value.
