PVTIME – Transport for London (TfL) has entered into a strategic partnership with SSE Energy Solutions to secure dedicated solar power for the London Underground network via private-wire connections. This initiative is a key step towards TfL’s goal of achieving 100% renewable energy for its operational needs by 2030.

TfL is the largest single consumer of electricity in London, with an annual energy demand of around 1.6TWh. This powers the city’s extensive public transport system, including the iconic Tube. Under the agreement, SSE Energy Solutions will develop custom-built ground-mounted and rooftop solar facilities next to TfL’s rail infrastructure to provide a direct, localised supply of clean energy.
This will provide TfL with up to 65,000MWh of renewable electricity each year, equivalent to around two-thirds of the Victoria line’s annual power consumption. Over a 25-year operational term, the project is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by over 27,000 tonnes.
Rather than relying on the national grid, the adoption of private-wire infrastructure ensures TfL receives a guaranteed supply of zero-carbon energy. This model also delivers long-term price certainty, mitigating the impact of volatile energy markets and enhancing the organisation’s overall energy security.
