2GW! Vikram Solar Signs Local Solar Cell Purchase Agreement with Jupiter

PVTIME – Vikram Solar has recently signed a local solar cell purchase agreement with Jupiter. Under this agreement, Vikram Solar will procure India ALMM-certified TOPCon and monocrystalline PERC solar cells from Jupiter, with a total capacity of 2GW. According to a regulatory filing by Vikram Solar, the order is valued at around 20 billion rupees.

Vikram Solar is currently expanding its in-house solar cell production capacity. However, there is still a significant discrepancy between its solar cell output and module production capacity. The collaboration with Jupiter is intended to swiftly address this imbalance. India’s new ALMM policy is set to take effect in June this year, after which new photovoltaic projects will be required to use locally produced solar cells.
Currently, the Indian market is experiencing a significant mismatch between solar cell and module production capacities, which is expected to bolster solar cell prices in the short to medium term. Beyond Jupiter, most solar cell capacity in India is used by enterprises for their own purposes, leaving a very limited amount available for sale to other companies.

Vikram Solar’s base project in Gangaikondan is also progressing, encompassing the AB-IV project under construction in Vallam, which has a planned capacity of 6GW for modules and 12GW for solar cells. All approvals and core infrastructure for the project have been completed, including access roads, a construction power supply, and office areas. Civil construction of the module and solar cell factories is also well underway.

The module factory has entered the structural and roof construction phase, with commissioning scheduled for the first quarter of the 2026–27 fiscal year. Construction of the solar cell factory is underway, with the foundation and basic structure being built. Key long-lead-time equipment and supporting plans are in the final stages, and the first solar cell is expected to be produced in December 2026. The project is advancing as planned, and Vikram Solar is committed to ensuring on-time delivery and steady capacity expansion.
