PVTIME – Bhutan’s renewable energy firm, Druk Green Power Corporation Limited (DGPC), has partnered with India’s Carbon Resources Private Limited (CRPL) to explore hydropower and solar projects with an installed capacity of between 100MW and 250MW. At the signing ceremony, Bhutan’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Lyonpo Gem Tshering, noted that the country has signed MoUs for over 12GW of installed capacity.

Under the MoU, the two companies will establish a joint venture registered in Bhutan to deliver the projects. DGPC will provide project details, past research and regulatory data, while CRPL will conduct technical, commercial and financial assessments of potential sites, alongside on-site inspections, evaluations and due diligence.
Several Indian energy firms are expanding into the Bhutanese market. DGPC’s parent company, Druk Holding and Investments Limited (DHI), has a long-term power purchase agreement with Reliance Power Limited for a 500MW solar project. India Power Corporation Limited is developing a 70MW solar project in the Paro district with Green Energy Power of Bhutan, with the aim of achieving 1.5GW of PV capacity within five years. Meanwhile, Tata Power has partnered with DGPC to deliver at least 5GW of clean energy, including 500MW of solar power.
Bhutan aims to have 25GW of installed power capacity by 2040, including 5GW from solar and wind power and 20GW from hydropower.
