Australia Launches Solar Sharer for Free Daily Power

PVTIME – On 4 November, Chris Bowen, Australia’s Minister for Climate Change and Energy, announced a new initiative offering households at least three hours of free solar energy each day from July 2025. This policy aims to address a significant shortcoming in the national energy system by encouraging residents to consume electricity during the day, when solar generation is at its peak.

This is intended to reduce operational and maintenance costs for the national grid during periods of high demand, when household and commercial energy use typically overlap. It also supports Australia’s broader clean energy goals by increasing the practical value of solar power, a resource the country has in abundance due to its geographic location.

The initiative aligns with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water’s guidelines, which set out Australia’s aim to source 43% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. By making solar power more accessible during peak generation times, the government expects to reduce reliance on fossil fuel-powered backup generation and further integrate renewable energy into daily energy use.
