$167m! Japan’s METI Awards Subsidies to Boost Perovskite Solar Production

PVTIME – Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has announced that it will provide a total of 24.6 billion yen ($167 million) in subsidies to three companies leading the way in the mass production of perovskite solar cells over a period of five years. The funding will support Panasonic Holdings, Ricoh, and EneCoat Technologies in advancing their technical innovations and pilot testing.

Each firm is focused on distinct product development: Panasonic is developing glass-based perovskite cells for integration with building materials, while Ricoh and EneCoat are working on thin, lightweight thin-film versions. Together, the companies aim to increase annual production capacity to 200–300MW by 2030, which would be enough to power around 60,000 households.

Ricoh intends to utilise its inkjet printing technology to make perovskite cells more widely applicable in homes and businesses. Meanwhile, EneCoat is partnering with Toyota Motor Corporation to explore using its products in vehicles and factories.

METI’s Green Innovation Fund will provide the subsidies, supporting decarbonisation technologies and having already backed another thin-film perovskite developer, Sekisui Chemical. METI has also set a national target for Japan to reach an annual production capacity of 20 gigawatts of perovskite solar cells by 2040.
