PVTIME – The EPC contract for Zambia’s 33 MW Irute Solar Project has officially been signed, marking the start of the project’s full implementation. The project is being delivered jointly by China Energy Engineering CPECC International Corporation and CPECC Northwest Electric Power Design Institute.

Located west of Sesheke, a border city in southern Zambia, the development will entail the construction of a solar power plant and transmission lines, as well as the upgrade of an off-site substation. The scope of work includes engineering design, equipment procurement, installation and commissioning, trial operation, and ongoing operation and maintenance. Construction is scheduled to begin in October 2025.
The project is particularly significant as it is Zambia’s first renewable energy Independent Power Producer (IPP) project to involve independent power purchasers in its development. It sets out a sustainable and replicable model for energy development across Africa and demonstrates innovative approaches to clean energy access. For CPECC, this is also the company’s first renewable energy EPC project in Zambia, establishing a solid foundation for expansion in Zambia and the wider African region.
Once operational, the project will supply clean electricity to Zambia and its neighbouring countries. This will boost the diversity and stability of power supplies in southeastern Africa, significantly easing local electricity shortages. It will also drive improvements to the regional energy infrastructure, providing reliable energy to support economic revitalisation in the surrounding area and helping Zambia to progress towards sustainable economic and social development.
