AGL Completes Acquisition of Tesla’s South Australian Virtual Power Plant

PVTIME – On 4 July 2025, Australian energy giant AGL announced that it had finalised its acquisition of Tesla’s South Australian Virtual Power Plant (SA VPP). The deal incorporates a network of 7,460 Tesla Powerwall home batteries into AGL’s portfolio, providing 37MW of total capacity alongside 25MW of linked rooftop solar systems. With over 8,000 households covered, AGL is now one of Australia’s largest aggregators of residential battery assets.

This acquisition is a significant step in scaling up virtual power plant technology, taking it from pilot projects to commercial deployment and reinforcing South Australia’s position as a global leader in power system transformation. It also advances AGL’s strategic goal of managing 1.6GW of distributed assets by the 2027 financial year.

AGL’s chief customer officer, Jo Egan, indicated that integrating these home batteries would make it easier for households to participate in the energy transition, turning everyday homes into active contributors to a more flexible, decentralised grid. This expansion highlights the shift towards coordinated, grid-ready renewable energy networks, which are essential for balancing supply and demand in modern power systems.
