PVTIME – Canadian Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: CSIQ) has secured an agreement to supply battery energy storage systems with a total capacity of 420 MWh (AC) for two UK projects owned by Drax Group. Once operational, the systems will enhance grid flexibility and support the seamless integration of renewable energy.

The projects comprise a 60MW/120MWh (AC) facility in Marfleet, England and a 150MW/300MWh (AC) storage system in Neilston, Scotland. Originally developed by UK energy infrastructure firm Apatura, they are now owned by Drax Group and will form part of its FlexGen asset portfolio.
Equipment delivery for the Marfleet project is set to begin in Q3 2026, followed by the Neilston project in early 2027. Canadian Solar’s e-STORAGE subsidiary will provide SolBank 3.0 systems and full lifecycle operational services under a long-term service agreement, covering monitoring, maintenance, and performance analysis.
Drax Group’s COO highlighted the significance of the partnership as the company’s first investment in short-duration storage, noting that the assets would complement its existing generation portfolio and ensure a reliable power supply during periods of low wind or solar energy production. Apatura’s CEO described the projects as being pivotal to achieving the UK’s decarbonisation goals, emphasising the importance of collaboration across different areas of expertise in order to deliver grid-secure assets.
Colin Parkin, President of Canadian Solar and e-STORAGE, emphasised the shared commitment to building a flexible and resilient UK energy system. He added that e-STORAGE would leverage its experience in the UK market to deliver reliable solutions and support the global transition to low-carbon energy.
