1.1GWh! Grenergy and BYD Ink Agreement for Energy Storage

PVTIME – On 12 January, Grenergy Renovables SA, the Spanish renewable energy company, signed a strategic agreement with BYD, a leading Chinese technology company, for the supply of 1.1GWh of batteries for large-scale energy storage systems.

As a battery developer and the world’s largest electric auto manufacturer, BYD will supply Grenergy with a total of 2136 units of its MC Cube ESS model, a storage system with its Blade battery. These batteries will be used in the first and second phases of the Oasis de Atacama solar-plus-storage project in Chile, with a total installed capacity of 1GW of solar power and 4.1GWh of batteries, which will be the world’s largest energy storage project with a total investment of US$1.4 billion. The first phase of this particular project is expected to be operational in 2024 and the second phase in 2025.

According to Grenergy, it has a portfolio of more than 10GWh of energy storage in various stages of development. Grenergy’s energy storage investment plan will be driven to maintain its leading position with a further investment of €800 million in energy storage projects over the next two years.
