PVTIME – The Japanese chemical firm Tokuyama and the South Korean polysilicon producer OCI have begun construction of a 10,000 MT polysilicon facility in the Samalaju Industrial Park in Sarawak, Borneo, Malaysia.

Tokuyama has confirmed that the two companies have jointly established OCI Tokuyama Semiconductor Materials Sdn. Bhd. (OTSM), a company responsible for manufacturing and selling semi-finished polysilicon products for use in semiconductors. The ongoing $435 million project is taking shape in the same industrial park where OCI’s Malaysian subsidiary, OCIM Sdn. Bhd., already operates a 35,000 MT polysilicon plant, a facility acquired from Tokuyama in 2016.
OCIMSB’s existing capacity of 35,000 MT, combined with a 3,000 MT plant in Gunsan, South Korea, brings the OCI Group’s total annual polysilicon output to 38,000 MT.
Separately, in August 2024, Tokuyama entered into an agreement with Thanh Binh Phu My JSC to invest $30 million in a polysilicon plant project at the Phu My 3 Industrial Park in Vietnam’s Ba Ria–Vung Tau province.
The new Sarawak plant is set to be a significant addition to the region’s polysilicon production landscape, building on existing operations and strengthening the relationship between Japanese and South Korean firms in Southeast Asia.
