PVTIME – TCC Group’s plant in Kaohsiung City, the region’s first super battery factory, was rocked by an explosion in the early hours of 14 July, followed by thick plumes of smoke.

The facility, which is a subsidiary of the Taiwan Cement Group, has been operational since 2023 and produces high-performance nickel ternary batteries. It has an annual production capacity of 1.8 GW, which is enough to power 24,000 electric vehicles.
The fire broke out in a warehouse where semi-finished batteries were undergoing their initial charging process. Footage from the scene showed flash fires and multiple explosions, with smoke visible for kilometres.
Kaohsiung’s fire department stated that they received the alert shortly after 5 a.m. and dispatched 46 fire engines and 91 personnel in response. Twelve employees sustained minor injuries and three firefighters suffered slight burns; all were taken to hospital for treatment.
The cause of the explosion and the extent of the property damage are still under investigation.
