Oxford PV Grants First Solar Licence for Perovskite Solar Patents

PVTIME – First Solar has entered into a non-exclusive patent licensing agreement with Oxford PV, a University of Oxford spin-off company, for the US market. This secures First Solar’s rights to Oxford PV’s issued patents and pending applications for perovskite solar technology.

The licence permits the manufacture and distribution of perovskite semiconductor-based photovoltaic devices for large-scale power, commercial, industrial, and residential sectors in the US, but does not include crystalline silicon semiconductors.

First Solar’s chief executive officer confirmed that the company has set up a pilot production line for full-size perovskite modules and plans to develop commercial-grade perovskite thin-film modules with 20% efficiency, 70% bifaciality, and an ultra-low temperature coefficient.

First Solar reported a $1 million increase in net sales for 2025, up from the $4.2 billion recorded in 2024. The business forecasts net sales of between $4.9 billion and $5.2 billion for 2026, alongside module shipment volumes of between 17.0GW and 18.2GW.
