LONGi+UNHCR: Clean Energy Lights the Way for Refugees Amid Pakistan’s Crisis

PVTIME – Pakistan is at the forefront of the impact of global climate change. The country is facing an intensifying crisis as soaring electricity prices are exacerbating unstable power supplies. This is leaving tens of thousands of people struggling to survive amid frequent blackouts. This is not just an inconvenience, but an existential threat.

LONGi, a leading PV company, is addressing this crisis through a vital partnership with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Pakistan. This collaboration provides clean, renewable energy to refugees and host communities, with a particular focus on ensuring a stable power supply for three local hospitals. Thanks to LONGi’s support, the UNHCR can direct reliable green energy to areas where it is most needed.

Today, the hospitals are free from power outages, ensuring that life-saving medical services can run without interruption and sustain both lives and hope. While the project saves USD 400,000 annually in operational costs, the UNHCR has highlighted that its true value goes far beyond finances.

Clean energy has also transformed safety for vulnerable groups. Refugees, women and children now benefit from consistent lighting, which reduces the risk of gender-based violence and creates calm spaces for trauma recovery. Children can now study and play after sunset and women can gather without fear, marking a profound shift from the insecurity of nightly darkness.

Building on earlier successes, in 2024 LONGi and UNHCR upgraded the Termez Humanitarian Emergency Warehouse and Logistics Centre in Uzbekistan’s Surkhandarya Region with solar power (UNHCR/Elyor Nemat). Their partnership was further strengthened at COP28, where they pledged to work together on climate action, energy equity, and the green transition, using renewable energy to reduce the carbon footprint of humanitarian supply chains.

Over the past two years, the two organisations have rolled out solar and community-focused projects across Uzbekistan and Pakistan, steadily paving the way for fairer energy access with solar power at its core.
