PVTIME – At SNEC 2025, PV giant LONGi made headlines with two groundbreaking technological achievements. Both were swiftly included in the 66th edition of the Solar Cell Efficiency Tables, attesting to their significance. These feats highlight China’s ongoing dominance in the global PV industry and set a new standard for energy efficiency.

Record-breaking perovskite tandem cell efficiency
Certified by the renowned National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in the US, LONGi’s large-area (260.9 cm²) silicon-perovskite two-terminal tandem solar cell achieved an impressive 33% conversion efficiency. This milestone shattered the previous global record for large-scale tandem cells. Through material innovation and cell structure optimisation, LONGi increased efficiency by almost 20% compared to single-junction silicon cells.
BC Module Pushes the Limits
In another significant development, LONGi’s BC (back contact) cell modules surpassed the 26% efficiency threshold, setting a new standard for crystalline silicon modules. This accomplishment reflects the company’s profound expertise in back-contact cell technology, bringing it closer to the 27% efficiency frontier.
These dual breakthroughs vividly demonstrate LONGi’s continuous investment in R&D and pursuit of efficiency limits. The company’s strategy of exploring multiple technological pathways — from maximising the potential of single-junction cells to pioneering tandem technologies — has yielded tangible results. The company’s efforts are aimed at making photovoltaic energy the world’s primary energy source.
Solar Racing: A Showcase of Technological Versatility
The conference also showcased the Infinite Apollo, a solar-powered racing car developed in collaboration between LONGi and the Belgian Innoputs Solar Team. Fitted with LONGi’s most recent BC cells and flexible encapsulation technology, the vehicle is set to compete in the prestigious Bridgestone World Solar Car Challenge (BWSC). This cross-industry collaboration is an innovative model for integrating photovoltaic (PV) technology into transportation and demonstrates the extensive potential for technological applications beyond traditional energy sectors.
