€300m! Gecama Spain’s Big Hybrid Renewable Project Bags Funding

PVTIME – Against the backdrop of widespread power cuts in Spain in April 2025, which highlighted the importance of energy storage, the country’s largest hybrid renewable energy project, Gecama, secured approximately €300 million in funding.

Developed by Enlight, the project will combine wind, solar and battery storage technologies to expand the existing 329 MW Gecama wind farm, creating Spain’s largest hybrid renewable energy complex. Solar arrays and grid-scale storage will be added, with commercial operations set to begin in late 2026.

Once operational, Gecama will have a total installed capacity of 554 MW and 220 MWh of storage, with a projected annual revenue of around $100 million, making it the largest facility of its kind in Spain.

A key strength lies in its integration of wind and solar technologies (which generate power at different times) alongside large-scale storage, enabling the delivery of clean energy around the clock. The storage system will store electricity during periods of low prices and discharge it during periods of high demand, thereby balancing the grid and boosting efficiency. It will also provide backup capacity and frequency regulation, enhancing grid stability overall.
