Hygen Energy Secures GeoPura as Off-taker for Bradford Hydrogen Facility

PVTIME – Oxford-based low-carbon hydrogen developer Hygen Energy has finalised a long-term hydrogen offtake agreement with GeoPura for its flagship production site in Bradford, West Yorkshire. This significant commercial deal secures a primary buyer ahead of the facility’s planned launch in 2028, reducing the risk to revenue streams for the UK regional hydrogen scheme.

Once operational, the Bradford Low-Carbon Hydrogen plant will supply low-carbon hydrogen tailored to two core market segments. GeoPura will use the hydrogen to power its fleet of zero-emission mobile units, while also meeting the requirements of local industrial consumers in West Yorkshire. This creates a localised supply loop, with domestically produced hydrogen serving nearby end users without heavy reliance on cross-country fuel transportation.

For Hygen Energy, securing a committed offtaker marks a major project milestone. Such long-term purchase contracts are widely considered essential for making final investment decisions on electrolytic hydrogen projects in Britain. By matching planned production capacity with confirmed demand, the project moves one step closer to full execution of the construction plan.

Industry experts note that the Bradford scheme is part of the United Kingdom’s growing regional hydrogen ecosystem. It shows how project developers are actively linking new electrolysis capacity with practical demand from power-as-a-service providers and industrial sites, rather than solely targeting the mobility market. Neither party has disclosed the exact tonnage value of the contract in the public announcement.
