800MWh! Mint Renewables Secures Planning Consent for Western‑Australia’s Stand-alone BESS

PVTIME – Mint Renewables, a renewable-energy developer, has obtained formal planning approval to build a 800MWh standalone grid-scale battery energy storage facility in Western Australia. This new large-scale flexible resource will support the South-West Interconnected System (SWIS), the main power network serving Western Australia’s populated regions.

Classified as a pure grid-connected standalone storage asset rather than a solar- or wind-tied hybrid installation, the battery facility is designed to deliver two core grid-support functions once commissioned. It will provide peak-shaving capacity to stabilise the power supply during periods of high electricity demand, while also absorbing surplus output from local wind and solar generation. This capability will ease the integration of variable renewable power onto the regional grid.

As Western Australia continues its energy transition amid the retirement of coal-fired generation, new independent battery assets are growing in importance. Projects such as this one help to mitigate the volatility of renewable energy output, thereby smoothing out mismatches between supply and demand across the SWIS. Although planning permission has been granted, the project still requires subsequent engineering assessments, grid connection negotiations and financing arrangements to be finalised before construction can commence.
