PVTIME – UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) has awarded major funding to the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) to accelerate the development of the UK’s national deepwater floating wind test site, DeepWind. The multi-million-pound financial injection significantly speeds up the construction and operational preparation of Britain’s dedicated floating wind verification platform, designed to drive the commercial maturity of deep-sea wind technologies.

Purpose-built for pre-commercial technology validation, the DeepWind facility offers comprehensive, full-scenario offshore testing solutions for the floating wind sector. It supports systematic verification of core equipment and systems, including floating turbine foundations, deepwater mooring structures, and full-scale grid integration configurations. By replicating real marine operational environments, the test site enables developers to identify technical defects, verify operational stability and optimise system performance before large-scale commercial deployment.
The establishment of DeepWind fills a critical gap in Europe’s offshore wind innovation ecosystem. Current industry infrastructure lacks targeted testing conditions that accurately simulate the complex deepwater wind environments required for next-generation floating wind projects. As a standardised plug-and-play test base, DeepWind allows technology developers, component manufacturers and renewable energy investors to conduct reliable, repeatable offshore verification, effectively reducing technical risks and investment uncertainty for emerging floating wind schemes.
The accelerated progress of the DeepWind project reinforces the United Kingdom’s strategic layout in the global floating wind market. By lowering technological barriers and improving industry standardisation, the national test platform will support continuous cost reduction for deepwater wind projects, foster the growth of the domestic offshore wind supply chain, and consolidate the UK’s leading position in marine renewable energy innovation.
