PVTIME – Iraq has reached a key milestone for its domestic renewables sector with the official commissioning of the country’s first solar panel manufacturing facility in June 2026. Developed by the Abbas Holy Shrine and named ‘النور’ (meaning ‘bright’), the site is a vital step for Iraq in localising high-tech renewable assets and advancing its long-term energy transition agenda.

Iraq’s persistent dependence on fossil fuels has burdened the country with elevated operational energy costs and sustained ecological harm. This new manufacturing site will strengthen national photovoltaic self-reliance in both the residential and industrial power sectors. According to senior project representative Zia Majid Al-Saigh, the facility’s premium solar hardware is designed to stabilise power delivery, reduce overall energy expenditure, and lower carbon emissions. This will support the development of a sustainable national economic model.
The النور plant is Iraq’s first intelligently managed solar manufacturing hub, fitted with cutting-edge machinery and automated robotic systems sourced from around the world, covering all stages of the production process. Stringent quality control protocols are in place to ensure product quality. The first phase of the project has an annual output capacity of 100 MW, and there are structured upgrade plans in place to expand production and enrich the domestic PV industry through continuous technical refinement.
The project has the full support of Iraqi authorities. The official commissioning ceremony was attended by multiple senior political and religious figures, including Karbala’s governor, Nasif Jasim Al-Khattabi, and secretaries-general from the Abbas and Hussein Holy Shrines. This high-level attendance reflects the project’s nationwide recognition and the government’s commitment to decarbonising sustainable energy.
