JA Solar Partners with ARTsolar for SA Manufacturing Expansion

PVTIME – JA Solar has partnered with the South African PV manufacturer ARTsolar to upgrade its Durban factory, converting it into a production line capable of manufacturing 340MW of high-efficiency, large-format modules. ARTsolar, founded in 2010, is a 100% locally owned enterprise.

This collaboration supports South Africa’s RMIPPPP initiative, which aims to alleviate energy shortages and encourage private investment in utility-scale renewables. These customisable modules meet international standards and address supply chain pressures by reducing import dependency and shortening project timelines.

As the leading solar market in Africa, South Africa prioritises local manufacturing in tenders. Although installed capacity is expected to fall to 1.1GW in 2024 (down from 2.6GW in 2023), a growing pipeline of privately procured projects signals accelerated deployment.
