PVTIME – The French solar module manufacturer Carbon has announced changes to its proposed gigafactory plan in France. The key change involves the firm abandoning its independently developed N-type TOPCon technology in order to collaborate with the Chinese photovoltaic giant LONGi on BC technology development.

The CEO of Carbon explained this decision by stating that building a gigafactory within such a short timeframe would not be possible without the support of companies with experience in project design and operations. He added that no project could achieve competitive costs and high quality standards within four years without such backing.
The photovoltaic gigafactory is a pilot project located in Miramas, Bouches-du-Rhône, in southern France, covering 16,000 square metres. In terms of capacity, the revised plan will see annual production of 700MW of BC modules, which is a 40% increase on the initial target of 500MW. The capacity upgrade and technical route shift complement each other, and are expected to enhance the project’s competitiveness in the market.
